Historical Background

Charles Edward Fournier was a carpenter who operated the first sawmill on the banks of Sutter Creek. In the early 1870's, he built both the Fournier House and its neighboring Victorian on one lot fronting the creek.

His craftsmanship is on display in several houses that he built in the area. In addition, he built many wooden railroad trestles, and helped in the construction of the famous Preston Castle in Ione.
